The concert model I picked out is made of zebra wood. I've never played an instrument made from this particular wood, and after researching the tonal qualities on the web, decided to give this one a whirl. See the pic below- it's more striking in person! It has a matte finish, and this one sports fret dots on the side of the neck. It has closed tuners, and the nut and saddlebone are made by Nubone. It's strung with Aquila Nylgut strings. Zebra wood, which comes from W. Africa, has much the same qualities as Indian Rosewood. My take on it is it gives a good, full, rich tone- it reflects the mids and highs well. And it can be loud! Packs a punch for it's size. Intonation is good, action is top notch, and I love the distinctive look. I sold off two other concert ukes I had after playing this one. Mandolin Babe's Pickin' Parlour (the store owned by yours truly!) is now carrying Kahua ukuleles. Right now I'm test marketing a tenor model, and a concert model. Of course I ordered one of each to try out before deciding to stock them. And I was very pleasantly surprised.

Every once in awhile,I get a message thru this blog from someone who has made a product to make learning chords and music theory easier to digest. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to Glowfly Press! The woman behind Glowfly is Heather Beaman, and she has designed,as she calls it, a "Brilliant chord chart" for ukulele. (There are also charts for mandolin, guitar, and banjo-just so ya know) What I love about these charts is it makes basic chord theory and explaining scales so darn easy to understand. As a banjo & mandolin teacher, believe you me,I get amazed at how beginners can either over complicate basic theory and struggle to understand concepts such as figuring out what basic chords are in a given key. Well, for those of us who learn best by visuals (I'm one of those!) take a look at her Kickstarter page- and watch the cool video that shows you her awesome design: Glowfly Kickstarter Chord Charts-Click 4 Video! Here's a closeup of one of the pages from the Ukulele chord chart. Notice how easy it is to see and understand the basic I,IV,V as well as more complicated info. She makes chord charts as well as scale charts (as mentioned in the video you watched- (you did watch it,right?) It's my hope that you share this blog entry with your musician playing friends and other music teachers. I feel Heather and Glowfly press have a lot to offer the music community!
